Toyama Kanken was born in Okinawa in 1888 and was taught martial arts at a young age by the greatest masters of the time. Among his teachers were Itosu Anko, Higashionna Kanryo and Aragaki Seisho. During a 6-year stay in Taiwan, he also learned various Chinese martial arts. In 1930 he settled in Tokyo and taught martial arts in a very comprehensive form in his dojo, which he called Shudokan. The death of Toyama Sensei in 1966 marked the loss of one of the greatest karate masters of the last century.
This book is the first to take an in-depth look at Toyama Sensei's life, his teachings, and the subsequent incredible, comprehensive, and previously largely unknown influence of him and his students on the worldwide development of karatedo.
To all those already familiar with Toyama Sensei's teachings, this book will provide new insights, and to all others it offers the opportunity to learn about the extensive legacy of this great master.
